Abstract

On December 13 and 14, 2004, and January 28, 2005, staff from Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) revisited the location of a proposed intersection improvement/realignment project roughly three miles north of the City of Elberton in Elbert County, Georgia. (Figure 1). The project area is located at the intersection of State Route 77 (SR 77), State Route 368 (SR 368) and County Road 242 (CR 242). The purpose of this revisit was to assess the effects of changes to the original project design on any potentially significant archaeological resources. The original survey was conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS). This addendum describes the results of the revisit and offers recommendations regarding the impact of the redesign on previously identified resources. Based on the results of fieldwork conducted in December 2004 and January 2005, EPEI recommends that no additional archaeological work is necessary in the redesigned project area. No new archaeological sites were identified. Two IFs were identified in the project corridor but due to their low research potential, they are recommended as ineligible for the NRHP. No further archaeological work is recommended in the redesigned APE. EPEI recommends clearance for construction for the overall project based on the revised project plans and APE.
