Phase I Archaeological Survey of Proposed Improvements to Old Covington Highway, Rockdale County, Georgia

Report Number

Year of Publication
2005
Abstract

The proposed project would widen Old Covington Highway from a narrow two lane facility with no roadway shoulders to a three lane facility with two 12 foot travel lanes and a 14 foot center turn lane. The project limits are Old Covington Highway from Green Street east to approximately 500 feet passed the SR 138 underpass. The project is approximately 1.0 mile long. The facility would contain two roadway shoulders, 16 feet in width. Within the roadway shoulders, five foot sidewalks are to be included. The existing right-of-way varies from around 40 to 60 feet. The proposed right-of-way is approximately 70 feet. In addition, the proposed project would tee Green Street into Old Covington Highway just east of the existing angle intersection. This will make Old Covington Highway a major street. The control at this intersection will be determined after signal warrant analysis is conducted. The intersections of Old Covington Highway with Dogwood Drive and Old Covington Highway with the Old Covington Connector are being relocated approximately 2,300 feet to the west in order to create a ninety degree intersection. There were negative findings.
