Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey along a 1.64-mile long corridor extending along Conley Road from Jonesboro Road/Highway 54 to 600 feet east of the intersection of Cherokee Trail in Clayton County, Georgia. The corridor study was conducted in anticipation of widening the existing Conley Road from a two-lane to a three-lane road within a right-of-way of 100 feet, although a 120-foot wide corridor was investigated between Thurmond Road and Jonesboro Road. The survey was accomplished by a two-person crew. No new archaeological sites were located. One previously recorded archaeological site was reported within the project corridor, but was not relocated during this survey as the site location was heavily disturbed by residential development. The potential for additional archaeological features within the corridor is unlikely. Thus, no further study of the Conley Road corridor is recommended.
