Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., has completed an intensive cultural resources survey of the proposed Swords Substation in Greene County, Georgia. The survey was completed for Rayle EMC, through the engineering firm of CCR Environmental, Inc. The project area, which measures approximately 0.7 ha (1.6 ac), is located in an upland setting approximately one kilometer west of the Oconee River (now impounded for Lake Oconee). One site (9GE1869) was recorded in the project area. This site consists of a subsurface scatter of historic artifacts in the vicinity of an open well. No structural remains are present in the survey tract, suggesting that the house must have been removed or destroyed for the construction of nearby transmission line and road rights-of-way. The site retains little integrity or research potential, and is recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places. It is therefore the opinion of the Principal Investigator that, in regard to cultural resources, the proposed project should be given clearance to proceed.
