Abstract

An intensive Phase I archaeological survey of a 2,400 acre (960 ha) portion of Fort Benning Military Reservation's Compartments T-l, T-2, T-4, T-5, T-6, and T-7, in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, was conducted by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI). The study area is located on wooded upland terrain in the central portion of the Fort Benning Reservation, approximately 13 kilometers (km) northeast of the Chattahoochee River and 2 km south of Upatoi Creek; several compartments lie adjacent to Ochillee Creek. The fieldwork was undertaken during a three month period from March 28, 1995, to June 30, 1995. Prior to this work, 17 sites had been recorded for all of the T Compartments, including the Mount Paran Church Cemetery (Benson 1994; Elliot 1992; Hight 1981; Poplin 1987; Shogren 1992). These present investigations resulted in the discovery of 32 new archaeological sites (9CE7339CE764) and 23 isolated finds. The Mount Paran Cemetery and Site 9CE450 were revisited. Site 9CE60, which also lies in the survey area, was not relocated. Twelve newly documented sites contain strictly aboriginal components whereas twelve others entail nonaboriginal components. Three sites possess multiple components, three others are prehistoric with isolated historic finds, and two sites are historic with isolated prehistoric finds. Seven sites (9CE740, 9CE742, 9CE746, 9CE750, 9CE753, 9CE754, and the Mount Paran Cemetery) are recommended as potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The remaining 26 sites and 23 isolated finds are recommended as ineligible.
