Abstract

A Phase I archaeological survey of a 288 acre ((116.6 ha) portion of Fort Benning Military Reservation's Compartment Y-3, in Russell County, Alabama, was conducted by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. The study area is a floodplain in the southwestern portion of the Fort Benning Reservation, south of Uchee Creek and approximately 1.7 kilometers (km) from the Chattahoochee River. It currently consists of an abandoned air field (Dekkar Strip) and a pine plantation. The fieldwork was undertaken during a four week period from May 1, 1995, to May 26, 1995. Prior to this work, one site had been recorded in the study area. This site, 1 RU96, was originally recorded as a historic surface scatter but was not relocated during the current survey. During PCI's survey of the tract, two new sites (1RU283 and 1RU284) and six isolated finds were detected, none of which were considered eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Site 1 RU284 also yielded prehistoric remains, yet the absence of diagnostic artifacts prevented PCI from determining cultural affiliation.
