An intensive Phase I archaeological survey of a 543 acre (219.7 ha) portion of Fort Benning Military Reservation's Compartment Z-4 in Russell County, Alabama, was conducted by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. The study area is part of LAE Field, which lies in the southwestern portion of the Fort Benning Reservation. The area, an arable floodplain on the southwest bank of the Chattahoochee River, is forested with stands of planted pines. Fieldwork was undertaken intermittently during a two month period from April 26, 1995, to June 30, 1995. The survey resulted in the discovery of 13 new archaeological sites (1RU270, 1RU271, 1 RU272, 1 RU273, 1 RU274, 1 RU275, 1 RU276, 1 RU277, 1 RU278, 1 RU279, 1 RU280, 1 RU281, and 1 RU282) and 18 isolated finds. Four of these newly recorded sites are recommended as potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), including: a historic Creek habitation (1RU272); a multiple component site (1RU273) yielding Late Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian, and historic (aboriginal and non-aboriginal) materials; a mid-nineteenth- to earlytwentieth-century domestic occupation (1RU275); and a possible late-nineteenth- or early-twentiethcentury domestic site (1RU278). The remaining nine sites and 18 isolated finds are recommended as ineligible.
