Abstract

This report is one of a six-volume set detailing the results of a large intensive cultural resources survey (4,279.6 ha, or 10,575 a.) within selected areas of Ft. Benning Military Reservation, Chattahoochee and Muscogee counties, Georgia (Contract No. DACW2193-D-0040, Delivery Order No. 0026). The survey was conducted by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District (COE). The tract investigated and reported on in this volume is referred to by Ft. Benning Range Control as Compartment 0-13, or Oscar 13. This parcel is one of 11 non-contiguous tracts within the boundaries of Ft. Benning Military Reservation that were investigated during the entire project (see Buchner 1996b:Figure 1). Oscar 13 is a wooded upland tract covering an area of 571.8 ha (1,413 a.) and is found in the north-central portion of Ft. Benning, Muscogee County, Georgia. The compartment is bounded on the east by Randall Creek, on the south by the paved Buena Vista Road, on the west by the improved gravel Lorraine Road, and on the north by Bulls Eye Road and a new variant of Bulls Eye Road. An abandoned rifle range (Darby Range) is located in the southeastern corner of the compartment. As a result of this intensive survey, 33 archaeological sites and isolated finds were recorded (9ME625-657). Two sites are recommended as potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NHRP).
