A Cultural Resources Survey of Compartment O-04 and O-15 Fort Benning Military Reservation Muscogee County, Georgia

Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 to 2000 in land management Compartments 0-04 and 0-15, which are located in Muscogee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U. S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment 0-04 contains 1,104 acres (447 ha), of which 648 acres (262 ha) were surveyed in the present study. A total of 19 archaeological loci (17 sites and 2 isolated finds) was identified during the current survey of Compartment 0-04. Ten of the sites in this compartment that were located in the present study may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). In addition, nine previously recorded sites are located in Compartment 0-04. Compartment 0-15 contains 477 acres (193 ha), of which 218 acres (88 ha) were surveyed in the present study. A total of 19 archaeological loci (10 sites and 9 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment 0-15. In addition, five sites were previously recorded; three of these were revisited in the present study. Four sites in Compartment 0-15 may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for these potentially eligible sites.
