A Cultural Resources Survey of Compartment A-10 and BB-01 Fort Benning Military Reservation Chattahoochee County, Georgia

Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 to 2000 in land management Compartments A-10 and BB-01, which are located in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment A-10 contains 366 acres, of which one acre was previously surveyed for archaeological sites and 365 acres were examined in this study. A total of seven archaeological loci (4 sites and 3 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment A-10. None of the sites in this compartment is deemed eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Compartment BB-01 contains 459 acres, of which 22 acres were previously surveyed and 437 acres were examined in the present study. A total of nine archaeological loci (3 sites and 6 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment BB-01. One site may be eligible for listing in the NRHP. Protective measures are recommended for this potentially eligible site.
