Abstract

Intensive archaeological survey was conducted by Southern Research from 1998 to 2000 in land management Compartments Q-03 and Q-06, which are located in the uplands of Chattahoochee County, Georgia. This work was done for the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Compartment Q-03 contained 514 acres, of which 463 acres were examined in the present study. A total of three archaeological loci (1 site and 2 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment Q-03. None of these sites were previously recorded. None of the sites or finds in this compartment were considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). One previously identified aboriginal site (Eric Poplin's Q3-1, no Georgia site number) is located in a previously surveyed portion of the compartment and it is considered potentially eligible for listing in the NRHP. This site was not revisited during the current study. Compartment Q-06 contains 562 acres, none of which had been previously surveyed. A total of 13 archaeological loci (9 sites and 4 isolated finds) was identified in Compartment Q-06. Three sites in Compartment Q-06 may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Protective measures are recommended for the potentially eligible sites.
