Archaeological Survey and Evaluation of the Proposed Braselton Wastewater Treatment Facility Expansion Project, Jackson County, Georgia

Report Number

Year of Publication
1996
Abstract

A reconnaissance archaeological survey and site evaluation was conducted within an approximately 60 acre tract in Jackson County, Georgia, for a proposed wastewater treatment facility expansion project during March and April, 1996. The investigation was conducted for Precision Planning, Inc., on behalf of the city of Braselton. Archaeological sites 9JK183, 9JK184, and 9JK185 were discovered during the survey phase of the investigation. Survey results indicate that sites 9JK183 and 9JK185 should not be considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Preliminary results from the reconnaissance survey indicated that site 9JK184 might be considered eligible for the National Register. Formal archaeological testing and evaluation was conducted on site 9JK184. Evidence of intact subsurface features associated with a Middle-to-Late Woodland Period Swift Creek encampment was discovered during the testing program. Based on these results, site 9JK1 84 is recommended as eligible for the National Register. Subsequent modification to the original wastewater treatment facility expansion plans indicates that no subsurface disturbance within the boundary of site 9JK184 will occur. Based on this modified construction plan, it is recommended that the project be allowed to proceed. No effects to the area of potential effect for site 9JK184 are anticipated.
