An Archaeological Reassessment of GDOT Projects STP-209-1(1)(2) and BHF-209-1(3), Fayette County. The proposed projects would widen and reconstruct SR 74/Joel Cowan Parkway from just south of SR 85 to just north of SR 54, and replace the existing bridge over Flat Creek, in Fayette County. Existing right-ofway varies from 100 to 130 feet. Required right-of-way would vary from 141 to 262 feet. Total length of the projects is approximately 8.1 miles. Since the time of the original survey the project has been extended by approximately 0.24 mile near SR 85 and temporary easements have been added for utilities and road construction. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed changes was conducted for the entire project area. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
