Abstract

A cultural resource inventory was completed for 138 acres of timber thinning, and approximately 5 miles of plow lines for prescribed burning. Portions of compartments 740, 766, 770, 771, 772, 775, 777, and 779 in Fannin, Murray and Gilmer Counties, Georgia were surveyed. These units are within the Armuchee-Cohutta Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, and border the Cohutta Wilderness. Elevation ranges from 3200' to 3600' AMSL. One prehistoric lithic scatter, site 9GI157, was recorded. This site is recommended as not eligible for the National Register. This survey was completed during the summer of 2005. None of the project areas had been previously surveyed. The fieldwork involved intensive archeological survey of the proposed project area to identify and evaluate heritage resources, and assess project effects on recorded properties. This report documents the results of the survey, site description, and recommendations for the site found within the project area.
