Abstract

This is an Archeological Reassessment of Project STP-164-1(49) in Henry County. The proposed project was previously surveyed by GDOT archeologist Eric A. Duff with concurrence received in December 1999, and reassessed with concurrence received in May 2003. The original project remains the same except for the following: the tie-in of Millers Mill Road with SR 138 has been moved from its previous location at STA 25+00 to STA 30+00. This realignment will require new right-of-way in a section approximately 140' wide by 500' long. In addition, new right-of-way will be required on the following roads: Old Millers Mill Road - approximately 40' of required right-of-way for 1,700'; Rhonda Road - approximately 60' of required right-of-way for 700'; SR 138 - approximately 60' of required right-of-way for approximately 2,300'; and Reeves Road approximately 60' of required right-of-way for approximately 300'. Total project length has been increased to 1.04 miles. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
