Abstract

During the period of October 28 through November 30, 1999, R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a literature review, Phase I cultural resources survey, and Phase II testing at Site 9CK13 for the proposed Expansion Area of the Blue Circle Aggregates Quarry in Cherokee County, Georgia. The project area consists of a 70.8-hectare tract west of the existing quarry approximately 2.5 kilometers northeast of Ball Ground, Georgia. Five sites (three prehistoric and two prehistoric/historic) and four prehistoric isolated finds were identified. Among the sites is Site 9CK13 which was previously recorded by Wauchope in the 1930s. This site was subsequently tested. Components from the nine resources include Unknown Prehistoric (n=7), Early/Middle Woodland (n=2), Late Woodland/Emergent Mississippian (Swift Creek and Woodstock phases, n = 1), Middle 19"'-Early 20"' century' (n = 1) and Late 19`"/Early 20"' century (n=1). Prehistoric task camp/locations dominated (n=7) followed by historic domestic discard (n=2), quartz quarry/workshop (n=1) and base camp/possible village (n=1). Four of the sites and the isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Based on the testing results, Site 9CK13 is recommended eligible for the National Register.
