Abstract

From December 1, 1999 to May 15, 2000, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted an intensive archaeological survey of 9,994 ac. (4,043 ha) within Fort Stewart Military Reservation, Bryan and Liberty counties, Georgia. The investigation represents the product of a contract with the National Park Service and Fort Stewart. The current delivery order's survey tracts consist of NRMUs A5.1, B4.7, B9.3, B 11.2, B 11.5, E1.2, E1.3, E2.2, F1.1, F1.2, F14.1, F18.1, F18.2, and F20.3. A total of 163 cultural resource loci were investigated during this survey (Table 1). The resources include 65 sites, four of which were previously recorded and 98 new isolated finds. An indeterminate National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility status was assigned to three of the sites: 9BN284, 9BN319, and 9BN321. The remaining cultural resources were recommended ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The current study includes background contextual information as well as data analyses. Background contextual information includes a discussion of the cultivation of tobacco within the Fort Stewart area. The data analyses include a study of site locations in respect to various environmental variables. Various distributional studies are undertaken herein, including analysis of site and artifact data on the intrasite and intersite level. Also, OCR assays were generated from soil sample collected during the fieldwork, and a discussion of these is included.
