Abstract

Terracon was contracted by the Chicopee Woods Area Park Commission (CWAPC) and the Southern Off Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) to conduct a Phase I Archaeological Survey in advance of improvements to approximately 9.7 km (6 miles) of existing and proposed bike trails for recreational use by off road cyclists. The bike trails are located in Chicopee Woods approximately 5.6 km (3.5 miles) southeast of Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia. Terracon conducted a file review and records search at the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) in Athens, Georgia, the Georgia Historic Preservation Division (HPD), and the NAHRGIS and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) websites. One NRHP-listed resource, the Chicopee Mill and Village Historic District, is located west of the project area. Proposed improvements to the current bike trails and construction of new trails are not anticipated to adversely affect the district. A Phase I Archaeological Survey was conducted by Terracon personnel from June 6 through June 8, 2006. Survey and investigation consisted of an examination of exposed ground surfaces and subsurface shovel test pits. The literature and document search as well as the fieldwork did not indicate the presence of any archaeological resources at the project site. Therefore, Terracon recommends no further archaeological research at the project site at this time.
