Abstract

In June 2006, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey at three locations along I-75 in Cook County, Georgia. These three locations include interchange modifications for the I-75 interchanges with CR 246/Kinard Bridge Road, CR 251 /Rountree Bridge Road, and CR 253/Barneyville Road. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Gresham Smith and Partners. A review of the state site files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that no previously recorded archaeological sites are located in the proposed APE. Additionally, no previously recorded sites are located within a 1 km radius of the proposed project areas. During the EPEI survey, two archaeological sites, 9CX12 and 9CX13, and three isolated finds (IFs) were identified. Sites 9CX12 and 9CX13 are prehistoric lithic scatters located in the northeast quadrant of the CR 251/ Roundtree Road interchange. Two prehistoric and one historic isolated finds were identified in the northeast and northwest quadrants of CR 251/Roundtree Road interchange. Due to their limited research potential, all identified sites and isolated finds are recommended as ineligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Based on the results of the survey, no further work is necessary at these locations and clearance for construction is recommended.
