Abstract

During March and April 2006, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed location for the Peachtree City Airport Expansion. The project area included approximately 85 acres. The project area is located southwest of Peachtree City, Fayette County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with PBS&J. A review of the state site files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that there were eleven previously identified archaeological sites within a 1.5 km radius of the project area. Two of these sites, 9FY36 and 9FY37, were recommended eligible for the NRHP and data recovery operations were undertaken at both. During the course of the current investigations, two archaeological sites, 9FY166 and 9FY167, and two isolated finds were identified. Site 9FY166 is recommended as potentially eligible for the NRHP. It is a low density but large site from which a number of Archaic and Woodland diagnostics were recovered. The stratigraphic condition of the site indicates there is good potential for features. Site 9FY167 is recommended ineligible for the NRHP; no further work is necessary at its location. Due to their low research potential, the two isolated finds are recommended as ineligible for the NRHP.
