Abstract

Archaeological Reevaluation of Project BR-0001-00(369), Clay County. The proposed project would replace the existing bridge on County Road 76 over Drag Nasty Creek. The existing 110x22 foot concrete bridge would be replaced with a 120x28 foot bridge. Existing right-of-way on County Road 76 is 100 feet and a maximum additional right-of-way of 20 feet would be required. The total project length would be 1700 feet. This reevaluation was concerned with the addition of an easement west of County Road 76 and north of Drag Nasty Creek. The proposed easement would be approximately 600 feet long and 70-80 feet wide. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
