Abstract

The proposed project would upgrade pedestrian facilities at seven locations throughout District 6. The upgrade would include installation of pedestrian poles, pedestrian signals, push button stations, synchronization of existing signal timing, and the construction of curb cut ramps and crosswalks. The proposed project was cleared archaeologically by Luke Erickson in 2004. Since that time three additional intersections have been added to the proposed project and are as follows: SR 3 at Tennessee Street in Catoosa County; SR 101 at Wax Road in Floyd County; and SR 61 at Hickory Level Road in Carroll County. All work will be restricted to within existing right-ofway for the implementation of the proposed project. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
