Archaeological Testing for the Proposed Dallas Highway/SR 120 Widening, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Cobb County, Georgia

Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project MLP-120-(51), the and reconstruction of Dallas Road/S.R.120, Cobb County, Georgia, was surveyed withrespect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. As part of the proposed project a three-fourths mile long segment would pass through Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. An archaeological survey of the segment through the park was required under the provisions of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A permit for such a survey was acquired on October 19, 1990, ARPA Permit #90KEMO/SERO-001. An intensive archaeological survey including, a metal detection survey, systematic shovel testing, and limited backhoe strip-trenching was conducted. Intensive data recovery excavations were conducted at two Civil War earthworks, one Federal one Confederate. Military artifacts recovered during the intensive archaeological survey and from the data recovery excavations included minie'/balls, percussion caps, and a single field artillery projectile. Other artifacts recovered post-date the Civil War Era. The goals of the intensive archaeological survey and data recovery excavations were to locate, document, and assess significant cultural resources within the proposed construction limits of the project corridor within the boundaries of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.
