Abstract

Management Summary During March and May 2007, archaeologists with Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted additional survey for the proposed South Calhoun Bypass. The original survey was conducted in March, April, and September 2000 by Southeastern Archaeological Services. The original Area of Potential Effect (APE) included 6.7 miles (10.8 kilometers [km]), which began at State Route (SR) 53, southwest of Calhoun, and continued almost due east, crossing Interstate 75 (1-75), before turning east-northeast to reconnect with SR 53, southeast of Calhoun. There are two new sections of alignment. Alignment in the first location, between County Route (CR) 98/Bray Road and CR 5/Darby Road, has been shifted 198 feet (ft) south for 4,011 ft. Alignment in the second location, along CR 62/Union Grove Church Road, has been shifted 110 ft. north adjacent to the Shaw Industries property. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the APE of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Greenhorne and O'Mara, Inc. The original survey of the project corridor resulted in the identification of eleven archaeological sites and four isolated finds. All were recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Based on the results of the survey, EPEI recommends that no further archaeological work be undertaken within the APE, and clearance for construction is recommended.
