Archaeological Reassessment of Project BR-0001-00(364), Tattnall County

Project BR-0001-00(364) would replace the SR 56 bridge over the Ohoopee River in Tattnall County, Georgia. This project was surveyed in 2004 by Teresa Lotti (HP040218-003). Since that time, the right-of-way has been changed to include lengthening of the mainline and easements have been added along the project. Originally, the project length was a total of 0.4 mile. The project has been lengthened by 0.07 mile on the east end of the project and 0.28 mile on the west end of the project. The total length of the project is now 0.8 of a mile. The existing right-of-way for SR 56 is 80 feet. The required right-of-way varies with a maximum of 160 additional feet at the bridge. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
