Abstract

During May 2008, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey for the proposed improvements to the Acworth Due West Road in Cobb County, Georgia. The project was conducted for the Cobb County Department of Transportation under a contract with the Parsons Transportation Group, Inc. During the current investigation, one archaeological site was identified. This site consists of expedient earthen fortifications and artifacts relating to the advance of General George H. Thomas' Army of the Cumberland on Kennesaw Mountain prior to the Battle of Gilgal Church (June 15, 1864). The site is recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criteria A and D. Following consultation with Cobb County and the Parsons Transportation Group, the current project corridor was redesigned to avoid the site. No construction would take place in this area as a result of project redesign. Based on the results of the survey and the redesigned APE, clearance for construction is recommended as the site would be preserved in place.
