Abstract

Greenhouse Consultants Incorporated was retained by Contour Engineering to complete an historic investigation, including an oral history interview of the owner, of the standing, early twentieth century John Pickens Henry II residence. The structure is situated on a parcel of land proposed for development as a Wal-Mart Supercenter. It is located on the east side of U.S. Highway 27, approximately two miles north of Summerville, in Chattooga County, Georgia. The initial cultural resource survey and archaeological testing of the entire proposed development parcel was conducted by our firm during June 2002. A supplemental investigation of the structure was initiated in late March 2003, and fieldwork was completed on April 12, 2003. This phase of the investigation was conducted under the direction of Catherine Wilson-Martin, historic preservation planner, and John W. Matthews, archaeologist. Mr. Matthews previously directed the original survey. Medium format archival architectural photographs of the interior and exterior of the structure were taken by Burke Walker. In addition to background research an oral history interview of the current owner of the home, and great grand daughter of John Pickens Henry II, Pamela E. Havird, was conducted. An initial interview of Ms. Havird was conducted by project principal, Barry D. Greenhouse, AICP, March 31, 2003. A more in-depth and detailed interview was then conducted by Catherine Wilson-Martin on April 12, 2003. The purpose of this data recovery effort was to document the John Pickens Henry II residence in order to mitigate adverse impacts from the development. At this time it is not known if the structure will be demolished, relocated or reconstructed. This data recovery was undertaken to comply with a request by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division to satisfy a possible Memorandum of Agreement between that agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Regulatory Branch, Savannah District in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
