Abstract

The Oconee Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests is considering trading away 137 acres in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. This is an isolated tract of land that is over five kilometers from the nearest Forest land, and it is therefore hard to manage. The entire tract of land was surveyed for heritage resource sites in 1993 and two sites were recorded. One site is an historic period rock pile site and was found not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The second site represents a historic period farmstead and it was not evaluated to determine its eligibility for the NRHP. National Forest personnel conducted further investigations at the second site and determined that it will require formal Phase II testing to determine its eligibility for the NRHP.
