Abstract

The proposed wetland mitigation site would include the restoration and enhancement of approximately 44.9 hectares (111 acres) located on a portion of the Echols tract in Pierce County. The proposed wetland mitigation would include backfilling of ditches, clearing of existing pine growth and the replanting of hardwood species. Adjacent parcels, consisting of approximately 135 hectares (334 acres), already vegetated with wetland hardwood species would gain collateral rehydration and forest preservation due to the mitigation efforts. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire area of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
