Abstract

On February 6, 1998, New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey for the widening and improvements to Millerfield Road at Jeffersonville Road, Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. The current survey served as a continuation to a previous archaeological survey conducted in this area by New South Associates in 1996. The project corridor is located along Jeffersonville Road beginning at the intersection of Walnut Creek and continuing east to Lynnhaven Avenue. The survey begins again at the Roseview Road intersection and continues southeast to approximately 152.4 meters (500 feet) east of the fork at Recreation Road and Jeffersonville Road. The proposed project will widen this area of Jeffersonville Road from two 3.6 meter (12 foot) lanes to four 3.6 meter (12 foot) lanes, therefore the survey area consisted of a 30 meter (100 foot) right-of-way. The total project length is approximately 0.72 kilometers (0.45 mile). This report provides a prehistoric and historic background for the area and completely chronicles the results of the archaeological survey. Field coverage of the proposed right-of-way widening consisted of transect survey. A pedestrian survey of the corridor utilized alternate 30 meter (100 foot) shovel test intervals along single transects as well as visual inspection of the exposed ground surface. No archaeological sites were identified within the areas of possible impact, therefore no further archaeological work is recommended in this area.
