Archaeological Assessment of Project NH-068-2(20), Bulloch County

Report Number
4836
Year of Publication
1998
Abstract

The proposed project consists of the widening of SR 301 beginning approximately 0.48 km (0.3 mi) south of Packing House Road extending northerly to approximately 0.27 km (0.17 mi) north of CR 445 for a total project length of approximately 7.16 km (4.45 mi). Existing right-of-way is a variable 30.48 to 45.72 m (100 to 150 ft). The total proposed right-of-way would be approximately 60.96 m (200 ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire project area. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
