Abstract

Project EDS-545(28) would widen US 1 beginning at the Bacon/Appling county line and terminate at its intersection with Speer Street in Baxley, Georgia. This project was originally surveyed by Garrow & Associates, Inc. in 1994 (HP940520-005). Since that time, the project has been changed to include intersection improvements, sediment basins, easements for pond restorations, and several driveway easements along the mainline. All of the easements vary in sizes with the largest being a pond restoration easement totaling 300 x 250 feet in size. The intersection improvements were located within the Baxley City limits and include CR 483/First Avenue, CR 483/Second Avenue/First Avenue, and CR 88/Woodlawn Church Road. The existing right-of-way for all three roads is 40 feet. An additional 80 feet of proposed right-of-way has been added to the intersection of CR 483/First Avenue and CR 483/First Avenue/Second Avenue with their intersection at US 1. An additional 75 feet of proposed right-of-way has been added to the intersection of CR 88/Woodlawn Church Road at its intersection with US 1. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
