Archaeological Reassessment of Project STP-159-1(26), Carroll County

Originally, the proposed project would widen and reconstruct SR 16/US 27 Alternate from just northwest of the SR 166 Bypass/US 27 Alternate intersection to just southeast of the US 27 Alternate/CR 24 intersection, for a total length of 1.65 miles. Existing right-of-way varies from 100 to 170 feet. Additional required right-of-way varies from 215 to 250 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor. The revised proposed project would add approximately one mile at the northern end of the project, in addition to the required right-of-way, which did not change in the revised concept. The change was made to allow for a proposed lane to merge into the existing lane. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
