Abstract

Archaeological Themes. Clearly, the main theme of the park must be the Civil War battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Yet, this theme can be approached either from strictly a military perspective or from the perspective of the civilian occupants of the battlefields. In addition, the occupation of the Chickamauga battlefield by U. S. Army troops in the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II provides a basis for comparative interpretation and research. An outline of comparative possibilities is contained in the Table. The civilian occupation of the battlefields both before and after the Civil War provides potential themes relating to the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction, the history of the park community, the development of the Lookout Mountain tourist industry and transportation systems, and the effect of the Depression on the park and its civilian occupants.
