In December, 1977, and January, 1978, the Institute for New World Research conducted a reconnaissance- level archaeological survey at sites of proposed construction in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, and a comprehensive search for literature relative to the area. The locations of proposed construction and modification are Camp Cornelia Subheadquarters, Suwannee Canal Recreation facility, a small section at the entrance to the Swamp Walk Boardwalk, and three areas where two-hundred foot right of way additions are to be made to the Boardwalk. Aboriginal material was recovered at both Camp Cornelia Subheadquarters and the Suwannee Canal Recreation area, but these artifacts were out of cultural context and not in sufficient numbers to merit further investigation. Relatively modern artifacts were also recovered in two areas of Camp Cornelia, but these too were not judged to be of sufficient significance to require additional attention. Insufficient cultural resources were recovered to warrant the designation of any parts of the areas surveyed as archaeological sites.
