Abstract

TRC Garrow Associates, Inc., conducted a Phase I archaeological survey on a 12 acre tract in Walker County, Georgia, in advance of proposed substation expansions for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The project area is situated less than 1.5 miles from Chickamauga, Georgia, which was the focus of considerable military activity during the Civil War. The Chickamauga National Military Park, commemorating the Battle of Chickamauga, fought in 1863, is located about 4.5 miles northeast of the project tract. However, background research indicates that no major Civil War activities occurred in the project area. One archaeological site, designated 9WA190, was found during the survey. This twentieth century house site is recommended ineligible as an archaeological site for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion D.
