Abstract

In March, 2007 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted a Phase I archeological survey of a 6.9-ha (17-ac) tract of floodplain land adjacent to State Route 211 on the south side of the Mulberry River in southern Hall County. Background research showed that prehistoric archeological site 9HL402 was recorded at the project area in 1993, and that the site had been recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The site was reinvestigated in 2006 and was then thought to be not eligible, but this conclusion was not firmly proven. The goals of the current project were to locate and evaluate any other sites in the project area and to attempt to firmly evaluate the significance of site 9HL402. Our shovel testing showed that much of the project area had deep fill and alluvium over what had been a low lying floodplain. The only site in the project area was 9HL402, which is located on a low erosional remnant in the floodplain. Our shovel testing, and that of the previous two investigations, shows that this is a shallow, sparse lithic scatter with little to no research potential. Therefore, we recommend that site 9HL402 is not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, we recommend that the project will have no adverse effects to significant archeological resources and should be allowed to proceed with no further work.
