Abstract

The southern half of the area to be effected by the proposed highway construction was surveyed on foot. This section begins approximately 200 yards west of the intersection of SR 15-US 441 and Milledge Ave. And terminates at the point where the proposed highway will intersect US 78. Much of this area is covered with heavy undergrowth, pasture land, and residential development. One quartz projectile point was found in this area, but was not associated with any other cultural remains. Test pits were dug in the area where the highway will cross the Oconee River, but no material was found. The Highway Department office was consulted and a check of their plans indicated that the northern portion of the proposed highway (from US 78 to the point where it joins the existing by-pass) has similar ground cover. Further surveying at this time would bring little positive results. It is highly recommended that after the initial clearing of the roadway upon commencement of construction, another survey of the effected area be conducted. The Highway Department in Athens has agreed to notify this office when clearing operations will begin.
