Abstract

During January 21 through 27, 2009, Phase II testing was conducted at Sites 90G541 and 90G542 to clarify the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility. These sites were identified during the Phase I survey of the proposed 80-acre landfill expansion site in Oglethorpe, Georgia and were recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP. At Site 90G54l,a historic farmstead, testing indicated that the site contains an intact late 19th/early 20' century midden and significant evidence of an early to middle 19' century occupation. In addition, the site was the home place of the Dawson Family, prominent Oglethorpe County landowners in the last quarter of the 19' century and early 201 century. Considering the intact archeological deposits in association with the Dawson Family and the potential for significant information on early 19' to early 20' century settlement in the county, Site 90G541 is recommended eligible for the NRHP. If the site cannot be avoided, data recovery is recommended under an approved Memorandum of Agreement. During the survey, Site 90G542, a Late Mississippian (Lamar) ceramic scatter, produced artifacts from a relatively deep plowzone. Since work on other deep plowzone Lamar sites in the project vicinity has revealed undisturbed features in the subsoil, there was potential for intact/partially intact cultural features at Site 90G541. However, testing showed the site to have low artifact density and diversity with no indication of features or intact deposits. Based on these results, Site 90G542 is recommended ineligible for the NRHP and no further work is warranted.
