Abstract

Project TASP-32 (85) would improve the intersection at State Route 32/Atlantic Avenue and City Street 552/Liberty Street in Nicholls, GA. South Liberty Street and S.R. 32 East would be resurfaced. The existing 9.3-meter (30.7 ft) to 10.8 meter (35.6 ft) roadway would be stripped to include one lane in each direction of travel with a left turn lane. Approximate length of each section would be a maximum of 123.5 meters (404.8 ft). North Liberty Street is a 6.2 meter (20.5 ft) paved roadway. The existing roadway would be widened by 2.3 meters (7.6 ft) and curb and gutter on each side of the roadway. This section would be stripped to include one lane in each direction of travel with a left turn lane. Total project length of this section would be 112.8 meters (372.2 ft). State Route 32 West is an existing 7.3 meter (20.1 ft) paved roadway. This section would be stripped to include one lane in' each direction of travel and a left turn lane. Total length of this section would be 123.3 meters (406.9 ft). No additional right-of-way would be needed except for two 7.5 meter miters located at the northwest and northeast corners of the intersection. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the HRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
