Abstract

Archeological investigation of the LeConte-Woodmanston plantation began on March 27, 1979 under the direction of Dr. C.H. The basic research strategy can be characterized as a diagnostic survey with a small amount of formal excavation. It was felt this course of action was necessary in order to best answer the goals of the Garden Club. According to Section 1 of the contract between the Garden Clubs of Georgia and Georgia Southern College, Georgia Southern shall do, or cause to be done, the following: a) test proposed parking area (60 x 90 feet) to clear for use, b) test proposed orientation area (size presently unspecified), c) testing to discover former location of LeConte garden, d) testing and excavation to determine house area and e) survey and testing to locate outbuildings and slave settlements.
