Abstract

Under several historic preservation laws and Executive Order 11593, dated 13 May 1971, the Corps of Engineers has the responsibility to identify and preserve cultural resources, or mitigate losses thereto, on lands under their jurisdiction. The pertinent authorities for this responsibility include the Antiquities Act of 1906, The Historic Sites Act of 1935, The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended including the National Historic Preservation Act Amendments of 1980, The Reservoir Salvage Act of 1960 as amended by the Archaeological and Historical Preservation Act of 1974, Executive Order 11593, The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of' 1979, and the National Environmental Policy Act. In compliance with these authorities, a cultural resources survey was performed on the below specified portions of Carters Lake, Gilmer County, Georgia on 27-28 March 1984 by Mobile District archeologists Ernest W. Seckinger, Jr and Neil D. Robison.
