Abstract

In response to your request, an archaeological survey of the proposed "New Family and Group Shelter" development area at Sweetwater Creek State Park (Douglas County, Georgia) was carried out on May 20, l983. Previous archaeological reconnaissance of the park (Crook 1980) indicated that the specific environmental location of the proposed development had a moderate potential for containing prehistoric archaeological resources, The development area covers approximately three hectares upon a ridge top overlooking a lake created by impoundment of Sweetwater Creek (Figure 1). Vegetation in the survey area was dominated by mixed pines, oaks, and hickories with a scattered scrub undergrowth. Remnant terracing existed along the periphery of the ridge top, indicating former agricultural use of the land.
