Report Number

Year of Publication

Abstract

The proposed project consists of the reconstruction of safety rest area 81 in Franklin County along the 1-85 north corridor. The project proposes to build a new restroom building with refreshment area and travel information centers. The project will also include landscaping and additional lighting and parking. The existing right-of-way width is 92.0 m (301.8 ft). The required right-of-way is 3.0 ha (7.5 ac). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the project area. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register located within the project's area of potential concluded, therefore, that the project will have archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in that the project conforms to that described above.
