Abstract

Project STP-054-1(46) would provide for a two-way left turn lane on S.R. 36 from mile post 14.01 to mile post 15.14, a distance of approximately 1.81 kilometers (1.13 miles). The existing right-of-way throughout the project area is approximately 15.24 meters (50 feet). An additional 0.863 hectare (2.133 acres) of required right-of-way is needed for the implementation of the project. Also, 0.138 hectare (0.342 acres) of permanent easement and 0.608 hectare (1.503 acres) of temporary easement will be utilized during construction. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project right-of-way was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted based on the "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or potentially eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
