Abstract

Originally, the proposed project consisted of the widening and reconstruction of SR 124. The project would begin at Centerville-Rosebud Road and ends at Henry Clower Boulevard in the city of Snellville. Existing right-of-way varies from 18.3 m to 24.4 m (60 ft to 80 ft). Total required right-of-way was approximately 42.7 m (140 ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor by Teresa Paglione in 1991. The current project has not changed dramatically from the original concept. Additional easement would be required beginning approximately 111m (364.2 ft) south of Henry Clower Road and ending approximately 332 m (1089 ft) south of Henry Clower Road. The easements vary from approximately 3 m (10 ft) to 15 m (50 ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the current project description was conducted along the entire project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
