Abstract

R. S. Webb & Associates conducted evaluative testing excavations at Site 9FO233 located in the Grand Cascades Creek development site. The Grand Cascades Creek development site is located 11.3 kilometers (7.0 miles) southeast of Cumming, Georgia in Forsyth County. Site 9FO233 was originally detected during a cultural resources survey of the proposed Lake Lanier reregulation lake and dam project conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (Gresham 1987). The site was described as a prehistoric subsurface lithic scatter covering an area of 70 by 40 meters. Testing confirmed that Site 9FO233 has pre-Late Archaic, Late Archaic, Late Woodland and Early Mississippian period components. A minor 20th century component is also present. Shovel testing and test unit excavations resulted in the identification of a 122 by 24 m area where intact, buried archeological deposits (pre-Late Archaic, Late Archaic and Late Woodland periods) are present. The surficial deposits (Early Mississippian period) of the site have been severely disturbed by cultivation and clearing. The intact areas have the potential for addressing research issues pertaining to prehistoric settlement, subsistence and alluvial land use along the main valley of the Chattahoochee Rivers. For these reasons, Site 9FO233 is considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. In-place preservation is the recommended treatment for the intact portions of this site. If in-place preservation is not feasible, data recovery is the recommended alternative.
