Abstract

The proposed project was originally included in project NH-078-1(20), Gwinnett County. That project consisted of the widening and reconstruction of SR 124. The project would begin at Rockbridge Road in Gwinnett County and ends at Centerville-Rosebud Road in Gwinnett County. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor by Teresa Paglione in 1990. The current project to be re-evaluated, BRN-078-1(22), only involves the bridge over Yellow River. The bridge would no longer be widened but would be replaced on new location just north of Yellow River. Existing right-of-way at the bridge is approximately 60 m (196.9 ft). Additional required right-of-way would be approximately 24 m (80 ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the current project description was conducted along the entire project corridor An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
