Abstract

Project IM-OOMS(371) in Gwinnett County proposes to reconstruct and rehabilitate the existing ramps and shoulders of the 1-85 and CR 134/Hamilton Mill Road interchange with concrete pavement. Upgrades to current standards will also be made to the guardrail turning radii and acceleration and deceleration lane lengths. The ramp intersections with CR 134/Hamilton Mill Road will be upgraded to provide the required left and right turning lanes, thus improving the operations of the intersections. No increase in the basic number of lanes on the ramps will be included in this project. The total length of the project is 2.1 miles. All work would be completed within existing right-of-way. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
