Abstract

The Columbus Museum of Arts and Sciences, Inc., conducted a. cultural resource literature and background survey of the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge and a cultural resource reconnaissance of certain portions of the refuge. The literature and background survey demonstrates that there were 57 archeological sites known to exist in or adjacent to the refuge prior to this reconnaissance. Ethnohistorical data suggests that a minimum of 6 historic "Creek" villages were located in the refuge area. An extensive reference list is included. During the reconnaissance, 11 additional sites were discovered. These sites are located on or adjacent to the proposed Kennedy and Davis-Clark project areas. Only 2 sites examined in the impact portions of the project areas were demonstrated to have archeological integrity. It is recommended that these sites (1Br78 and 1Br79) be more extensively tested to determine their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. It is further recommended that an extensive reconnaissance and then survey be undertaken on the entire refuge to implement compliance with Executive Order 11593. Finally, recommendations are made for a monitoring program of eroding and submerged sites.
